Orchid plant care tips

Orchid plant care tips

Orchids are beautiful plants that can add a touch of elegance to any space. Many people can struggle to keep orchids, normally by giving them too much attention! We have listed below some care tips, follow these and hopefully you’ll manage to keep your orchid healthy and blooming for longer.

  1. Light Requirements: Orchids thrive in bright, indirect light. Place your orchid near a window with filtered sunlight, such as a north or east-facing window. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. Orchids do not do well in dark, low lit rooms.
  2. Temperature and Humidity: Orchids prefer a warm, humid environment. Maintain daytime temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C) and nighttime temperatures between 60-70°F (16-21°C). A kitchen or bathroom are ideal rooms for Orchids.
  3. Watering: Water your orchid thoroughly but infrequently. Typically, watering once a week is sufficient. Allow the potting medium to dry out slightly between waterings. Water early in the day to allow excess moisture to evaporate, reducing the risk of root rot. Use room-temperature water and avoid letting water sit in the crown of the plant.

If your orchids’ plastic pot is inside a decorative pot, always remove the plant from the decorative pot when watering it.  Water, then allow the plant time to drain, before returning to the decorative pot. Orchids do not like to sit in water, as this can cause the roots to rot.

  1. Feeding: Fertilize your orchid every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced orchid fertilizer. Reduce feeding to once a month during the fall and winter. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for dilution and application.
  2. Air Circulation: Orchids benefit from good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. Ensure the room is well-ventilated but avoid placing the orchid in a drafty area.
  3. Repotting: Repot your orchid every one to two years, preferably after it has finished blooming. Use a specialized orchid potting mix, which typically includes bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss. Choose a pot with good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
  4. Pruning: After your orchid blooms, cut the flower spike just above the node where the first flower appeared. This may encourage a secondary bloom. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to maintain the plant’s health and appearance.
  5. Support: Some orchids may need support to keep their flower spikes upright. Use a stake and soft ties to gently support the spike as it grows.
  6. Pests and Diseases: Inspect your orchid regularly for signs of pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Also, be on the lookout for signs of disease, such as black spots or mould, and address these issues quickly.

We hope your orchid brings you much pleasure. If you have any concerns, please contact us within 24 hours of receipt.
